Ask any avid roulette player and they will tell you that there are two basic styles of roulette wheels. There is the American roulette wheel, which is of course popular in the United States, and there is the European Roulette wheel, which is popular just about everywhere else. If you ever had the chance to see both types of roulette wheels then you are probably already aware of the differences between the two. For those of you who are not, then I will give you a basic overview.

Let’s start off with the American roulette wheel. This one contains thirty-six numbers plus two zeros, a single zero and a double zero. This gives the American roulette wheel thirty-eight numbers.

The American roulette wheel has a number of interesting characteristics. Some of these characteristics include, the alternation of the black and red numbers, two even numbers alternate with two odd numbers, all black numbers are opposite of the red numbers, odd numbers are opposite the next higher even number and most of the numbers are part of a pair. Another interesting fact about this roulette wheel is that the single zero and the double zero are both colored green.

The European roulette wheel, sometimes called the French wheel, is a little bit different. It has thirty-six numbers, plus a single zero. This gives a total of thirty-seven number slots. Like the American version, numbers on the European roulette wheel alternate red and black. But, there are a few differences, as well. Along the arc, and to the right of the zero, there are nine small black numbers and nine large red numbers. To the left of the zero, there are nine big black numbers and nine smaller red numbers.

As is the case with most anything, players will often have a preference between the two types of roulette wheels. Some will prefer the more comfortable American roulette wheel, while some will prefer the European version, which has considerably better odds. I personally favor the European roulette wheel because it offers the best odds. That difference in one number cuts the house advantage down to half of what the house advantage on the American roulette wheel offers. The European version has a house advantage of two percent, the American version’s house advantage is five percent. Big difference, right?

But, it’s also interesting to note that there is another distinct difference when playing on an European roulette wheel. It’s the chips. In Europe, it’s common for all the chips to be the same color, no matter who they belong to. You would think that it would cause a lot of confusion between the patrons, but it really doesn’t. They just have to use their memories to remember what chip belongs to whom. At American roulette wheels, the patrons are all given different colored chips so they don’t mix them up. I imagine if they suddenly changed them one night, then there would be massive confusion in the casinos. They would probably have to use the security cameras to sort the whole mess out.

Of course, everyone should use the roulette wheel that they feel comfortable with. Some people don’t have a choice as to which one to use, because of where they live. But, many casinos in the United States are beginning to offer European roulette wheels to its customers. And hopefully, European casinos will begin to offer American roulette wheels. Then we can all play on the roulette wheel that we prefer. We can play the style that we are most comfortable with, have the greatest odds of winning with, or provide as with the greatest game-play. After all, it’s all about fun and games folks.
