Roulette Rules

Roulette is a game that has been played for over four hundred years. It originated in France, and over the years roulette rules slowly changed until it became the common form that can be seen today. It is now considered to be one of the most popular games of chance in Europe and many portions of Asia. Roulette rules are pretty straight forward nowadays. The game is usually played with around eight players, who play against the dealer. The dealer is also called a croupier and is responsible for handling the wages, spinning the wheel and paying the winners. The European roulette rules stat that the wheel must contain thirty-six numbers and one zero.

This version is also called the French Version. In the American version, the wheel contains thirty-eight slots which represent thirty-six numbers and two zeros.

While different casinos may have slightly different variations on the basic roulette rules, most often than not, they are pretty standardized. During a game, each player is given betting chips that are unique to that player, so that the players don’t mix up their winnings. After the wheel has been spun, if the player has won, then the chips are changed out for “cash chips”. These cash chips have the monetary value imprinted on them, so that their exact value is never in doubt. These chips can usually be cashed in either at the table or at the winners cage.

Roulette rules make game-play very simple. Bets are placed on numbers, usually on the outside of the table. When all participants have had a chance to bet, the dealer than spins the wheel and sets the ball in motion. Right before the balls is ready to drop over the numbered slots, the dealer announces “that no more bets will be accepted”. After this announcement is made, no player is allowed to make any further bets or change the ones they have already placed. When the ball falls, the winners are the ones who have placed bets on or around the number that the ball fell into. As you can see, roulette rules are simple and straightforward.

According to roulette rules, payouts are determined by how bets are placed. If a player places a bet on only one number, that is called a straight bet and payouts are thirty-five to one. A bet that was placed on two numbers is called a ’split’ and that pays at seventeen to one. A bet that was placed on three numbers is referred to as a street wager, and it pays at eleven to one. A corner wager is when a wager is split among four numbers. This wager pays eight to one. A wager that is placed on six numbers has no technical name and pays at five to one. Side bets also have different payouts, as well. A wager that is placed on a column pays two to one, and a wager that is placed on the outside, pays one to one. Roulette rules usually place the house advantage at a little over two and a half percent. On a roulette table that contains double zeros, the house advantage swells to over five percent.

As stated earlier, different casinos have slightly different variations on roulette rules. Let me give you two examples, the “en prison rule” and the “la partage rule”. The en prison-rule is applied to even money bets only. Under this rule, when the outcome is zero, some establishments will allow players to take back their bets. Under this rule, they can also leave the bet, a process called ‘putting the bet in prison’. Under this roulette rule, if the second spin is zero then the bet is permanently lost. The la partage roulette rule is pretty much the same as the en prison rule, except that half of the bet is lost if the result is zero.
