Cheating At Roulette

Ever since the creation of the game of roulette, gamblers have tried various ways of cheating at roulette. These players have done this in order to gain an advantage over the house and win a greater percentage of the time. Now I would never advocate cheating at roulette, and in fact I think that it is quite unnecessary if you approach the game with a legitimate strategy, but I thought it would be interesting to look at some of the ways that players have tried cheating at roulette. If your with me, then read on.

Of course, it wouldn’t be fair to talk about the players cheating at roulette if I didn’t also take a moment to talk about cheating casinos.
Cheating At Roulette

Yes, that’s right, there has been a number of casinos over the years who have tried cheating the player. These are a mostly a thing of the past due to betting regulations for traditional and online casinos, but it is an interesting historical fact, nonetheless and deserves some space of its own in this article.

Lets start with the methods that the casinos used to try cheating the players before we move on to players cheating at roulette. Before 1931, the year when gambling became legal in Nevada, it was quite common for gamblers to play on rigged wheels (without their knowledge of course). In fact, it was so common that the Nevada legislature even took up the issue in a special assembly of the legislature. Rigged wheels were operated by pedals worked by the dealers. They would merely stop the wheel on a number that no one was betting on. It was pretty sneaky, but came to an abrupt halt in 1931 when the Nevada legislature established a gaming board to oversee the casinos. Today, oversight of the casinos is strict and this rarely ever happens.

Now lets take a look at some of the methods players used when cheating at roulette. The first method that I want to talk about is late betting. This was a very sneaky move that could only be pulled off by the most skilled cheaters. What the cheater would do is try to sneak their bets on the board after the ball has landed in a slot. This would usually be accomplished by waiting for the dealer to look at the wheel after the spin, or by distracting the dealer with the aid of another person. Some players would even try to remove their losing bets quickly after a spin. Both of these types of late betting were put to rest when casinos started adding video cameras and pit bosses to the tables.

Another method that was used by players cheating at roulette was tampering. Very desperate gamblers would try just about anything to change the way the wheel behaved. They would apply glues to the pockets of the wheels and use magnets to change the behavior of the ball. Some would even go as far as tampering with the wheel itself to produce a more favorable result. Can you imagine that?

Fortunately, the days of “wild west roulette” has ended. Casinos have to meet strict standards of compliance with the accepted rules and best practices of the gambling industry and players are prevented from cheating at roulette by the use of cameras. And for that, I am glad. After all, there is no reason to cheat at roulette. If you want to win, then all you have to do is use a good strategy and play with your head. I hope that you have enjoyed this article and wish you the best of luck in all your gaming endeavors.
