While there may seem to be a vast variety of different roulette styles, they can be broken down into two distinct varieties that are seen the most often. The first style is American roulette and the second type is of the European variety. Today, we are going to be discussing American roulette here, and we will save the European version for another time. The differences between the two are not only aesthetic, but also effect your odds of winning.

American roulette features a table that is a little bit different than a European table. On American roulette tables, the numbers are placed in pairs opposite of each other. On European tables, the numbers are placed in a random order.

This is what I consider to be the aesthetic differences between the two. The number placement doesn’t affect your odds, or the house advantage, so it is really just a choice of which you like more. Personally, I enjoy the American roulette tables because they are way more practical. They also seem to make it easier to place bets. But, I do think that the European tables are more beautiful. This is because they appear symmetrical, but it’s really a personal choice.

One thing that does affect the odds on an American roulette table is the wheel. The American roulette wheel has an extra zero. The European wheel contains a single zero, and the American roulette wheel contains a zero and a double zero. Now, at first thought you wouldn’t think that would have a huge impact on the odds, after all it’s only the addition of a single number. But in reality, it does. European table have a house advantage of two percent, while American roulette tables give the house an advantage of over five percent. As you can see, that is a drastic difference.

It is no wonder that European tables are more prevalent throughout the world. In fact, during my travels I have only seen American roulette tables. I am not sure if its because the odds of winning on American roulette tables are lower than on European tables, or because the European one appears more sophisticated. I am sure that it’s probably the former, even though as I said earlier I do really like how beautiful the European tables are. But, if I would say that for ease of use, which is important during heavy gaming sessions, I prefer American roulette. As far as the house odds, of course American roulette is less favorable. The house advantage is double that of European roulette, a fact that a lot of gamers don’t realize.

But, the only way to determine whether you prefer American roulette, or the European version, is to try out both tables yourself. Play a few games at each particular style and see how the tables affect your game-play and the flow of the game. It’s also important to try them out for comfort. Do you feel like you have to excessively reach over the table, or the view isn’t the way you would like it? These are important considerations and have a great impact on your enjoyment of the game. It is up to you if you favor American roulette, or its European cousin. Whether you prefer aesthetics, practicality, or odds of winning, deciding between American roulette and European roulette is an extremely personal decision. There is one thing to remember, however. No matter which one you choose, you should remain that roulette is a game and its main purpose is to provide entertainment. If you keep that in mind, it really doesn’t matter which one you choose, as long as you have fun.
